Rishi Sunak has finally called a General Election for Thursday 4th July 2024. The country desperately needs change and this is our opportunity to elect a Labour government.
It has been an honour and privilege to represent Battersea since 2017 and make our area the best place possible to live, work, and visit.
My record for you:
- Since first being elected in 2017 as your Member of Parliament, I have dealt with over 54,000 cases on behalf of residents and held regular surgeries and coffee drop-ins in all parts of Battersea.
- In Parliament, I’ve campaigned for safe, decent, and affordable homes for Battersea residents including calling for an end to the unfair leasehold system, and secured support for residents unfairly saddled with the bill for cladding removal and fire safety remedial work following the Grenfell tragedy.
- I have championed a thriving local economy, working in partnership with local businesses on initiatives such as my Jobs Fair. I have also secured crucial financial support during the pandemic and energy crises, and secured fairer pay for security workers at New Covent Garden Market.
- To ensure that everyone feels safe in our community, I’ve secured more police officers across Battersea, additional CCTV, increased lighting in hotspot areas, and launched my Safe Spaces initiative to protect women and girls.
- I have stood up for our NHS by introducing a National Eye Health Strategy Bill for England to end the crisis in eye health. It ensures everyone has access to eye care where and when they need it so as to prevent avoidable sight loss, will reduce waiting lists and also address workforce shortages.
- I have campaigned to make transport and public spaces more accessible and inclusive. This has included making the Thames Pathway safer for all users; saving vital Battersea bus routes such as the C3; reversing planned Tory rail ticket office closures at Wandsworth Town and Clapham Junction; ensuring most of our stations are fully accessible; and changes to Battersea Bridge that will be implemented later this year to make it safe for all road users. It was a proud moment to see the Northern line extension open in North Battersea.
- I’ve worked to make Battersea even greener and cleaner, resulting in our area having some of the best air quality levels in London, and have consistently campaigned for sustainable actions to tackle the climate and environmental crises.
- I have created opportunities for young people to make Battersea the best place to grow up. This includes my annual Political Summer School and my work with local schools and youth centres as well as campaigning for more resources for SEND provision.
- I have repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate release of hostages, restoration of funding for United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and the upholding of international law with regard to the conflict.
On July 4th, we have a historic opportunity to put an end to Tory chaos, division and decay and introduce a new era where we will have a Labour Mayor of London, Council, Member of Parliament, and Government.
My pledges for Battersea:
- Deliver safe, secure, and genuinely affordable homes.
- Build a thriving local economy with more well-paid jobs.
- Rebuild the NHS, reduce waiting times, and provide the public services you deserve.
- Redouble efforts to reduce crime on our streets and increase neighbourhood policing.
- Improve transport and ensure accessible public spaces.
- Make Battersea even greener, cleaner and healthier.
- Invest in young people’s future: creating jobs, skills and opportunities for all.
